Importing Exporting In And From The Uk Post Brexit

HMRC has released an update regarding EORI numbers and the importing and exporting of goods in and out of the UK post Brexit.

In order to import and export goods into the UK, an EORI number is needed. EORI numbers are currently used by businesses who trade with the rest of the world. An EORI number is not needed for trade with the EU. However, if the UK leaves the EU with no deal many UK businesses will have to treat trade with the EU countries in the same way as with the rest of the world. This means that an EORI number will be required for UK-EU Trade.

  1. If a client has a UK EORI number, it can continue to use this for UK-EU trade.
  2. If the client has an EU EORI number, it can use this for a temporary period, after which the HMRC will advise on when to make the switch to a UK EORI number

Transitional Simplified Procedures (TSP)

  1. In order to simplify the importation of goods into the UK, the HMRC introduced the Transitional Simplified Procedures (TSP) for business established in the UK
  2. To take advantage of the TSP, the client must sign up for TSP, after which it will be able to import goods into the UK from the EU without making a full customs declaration at the border, and thus will be able to postpone paying any import duties.
  3. Registration for the TSP is done online. In other to register for the TSP, the client must have an EORI number
